Ethics of Conviviality · Ética de Convivencia

We imagine this conference as a community committed not only to intellectual work but also to an ethics of conviviality. We expect those who create, participate, and sustain that community to treat one another with respect, dignity, kindness, and consideration, whether that be on La Plaza, in our Virtual Hallway, and across any other interactive forums, including any in-person and remote nodes. Disagreement and debate is fine when done in the spirit of engagement, not antagonism. Harassment, bigotry, and disrespect will not be tolerated, nor will any threatening speech or content. While virtual spaces can bring us together in incredible ways, they can also create distance and the illusion of non-accountability. Let’s be good to one other as we embark on this experiment together.

We therefore ask that, as you participate in this conference, you keep in mind the ethical responsibilities that we share toward each other as partners in dialogue and conversation. This is a AAA event and we expect everyone to abide by the principles of the AAA about maintaining respectful and professional relationships with one another, as well as abide by AAA policies regarding sexual harassment. Anyone found to violate these expectations during the conference will not be permitted to continue as a participant and may face further consequences from the AAA.

The organizers will be present on these various forums, but we also hope that, as a member of this community, you will do your part in ensuring conviviality, even if that means (gently) guiding a wayward member back to a more productive mode of interaction.

Please report violations of these ethics of conviviality to report.distribute2020@culanth.org. We will remove offensive content as quickly as possible, remove offenders from the Virtual Hallway, and disable accounts producing offensive content on interactive platforms. We reserve the right to cancel your conference registration without refund for violating these ethics of conviviality.

Imaginamos esta conferencia como una comunidad comprometida no solo con el trabajo intelectual sino también con una ética de convivencia. Esperamos que aquellos que han creado, participan y mantienen esta comunidad se traten unos a otros con respeto, dignidad, amabilidad y consideración, ya sea en La Plaza, en nuestro Pasillo virtual y en cualquier otro foro interactivo, incluyendo los nodos en persona y remotos. El desacuerdo y el debate están bien cuando se hace con el espíritu de compromiso, no de antagonismo. Security and the Virtual Hallway · La Seguridad y El Pasillo Virtual

One of the main features of Distribute 2020 is our Virtual Hallway where participants can gather after panels or a set of panels to converse with panelists. We are using Zoom for this Virtual Hallway, and we are taking steps to balance accessibility with safety and security. As many of us know all too well, real-world vulnerabilities produced by structural racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression can become even more pronounced online. We are doing what we can to detect and mitigate potential security threats. For instance, we will:

Require passwords for entry into the Zoom Virtual Hallway.

Limit questions during discussion sessions to Chat only unless there are fewer than 20 participants in the Virtual Hallway.

Mute all participants during discussion sessions unless there are fewer than 20 participants in the Virtual Hallway.

Monitor the Virtual Hallway for unwanted and offensive content

We realize these restrictions cut into the interactivity we had been aiming for. But the increase in coordinated Zoombombing has made us wary, and we are consciously taking steps to protect our conference community from harassment.

We are also doing what we can to create a system for reporting violations of our Ethics of Conviviality (see above). You can report problems—Zoombombing, harassment, and other violations of these ethics of conviviality—to report.distribute2020@culanth.org. We will remove offenders from the Virtual Hallway as quickly as possible and disable accounts producing offensive content.

We will also do what we can to support victims of individual or group harassment by offering online resources and opportunities to discuss any problems with us.

We want to acknowledge, however, that the global transition to virtual life – and the concomitant uptick in forms of online harassment like Zoombombing, many of them coordinated – has taken us into unanticipated and uncharted waters, and we ask for your solidarity and your patience as we navigate these new waters together.

Distribute 2020 follows the terms and conditions of fair use, which allows for the use of copyrighted material without the express stipulation of the copyright holder under certain conditions. These conditions include: 1) use for educational and/or satirical purposes; 2) use of only a small portion of the original work; 3) use that differs substantially from the original work; 4) use that does not diminish the "value" of the original work; 5) use that does not provide financial benefit to the user. Distribute 2020 strongly advocates for these fair use policies as a means to maintain academic and artistic expression, freedom of information, and knowledge distribution.
