These are increasingly uncertain times. We know that many of you, like us, have had to shift goals, priorities, and lifestyles during this health crisis and that, in many cases, work and conferencing is the furthest thing from your mind. We recognize this and want to make sure you know that our first priority as organizers is that you maintain your physical and mental health during this time. Work can and should wait. On the other hand, many fantastic panels have already been submitted and we hear that many of you are finding stability, consistency, and hope as you look toward the conference. We would like to respect these sentiments as well.
We therefore plan to continue with Distribute 2020 as a virtual conference, but we are aware that the configuration of the conference may change under fast-evolving conditions. Some nodes will not be able to gather in person as institutions shut down and people self-isolate, and we want to emphasize that you should feel free to forgo a physical node and create other forms of sociality that you think make sense. As the next few weeks go by, please let us know what you are thinking: do you want to take your local node online? Do you still want to gather, but in a smaller group – or in multiple smaller groups – than anticipated? If so, contact us so we can think through this together, and we can help you, wherever possible, with technical needs.
All of us are being impacted in heart-wrenching ways during this strange and difficult moment. Many of us are rethinking how we relate to each other in times of crisis, and we hope Distribute 2020 will provide one platform for precisely that kind of engagement, not just with ideas but also with each other. Stay tuned for more ways we can do that before, during, and after the conference.
